Saving Seabirds Through Rescue, Rehabilitation and Conservation
SANCCOB Cape Town is a non-profit organisation based in Table View, Cape Town, dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of seabirds. Established in 1968, the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) works to reverse the decline of seabird populations, with a particular focus on the critically endangered African penguin.
The organisation provides care for sick, injured, abandoned and oiled seabirds, including penguins and other coastal bird species. Its work includes veterinary treatment, chick rearing, rehabilitation, research and conservation initiatives that support the survival of seabirds along South Africa’s coastline.
SANCCOB also responds to oil spills and other emergencies that threaten seabird populations. Through its rescue operations, partnerships with conservation organisations and work at seabird breeding colonies, the organisation contributes to the protection of marine wildlife.
Education is another key part of SANCCOB’s work. Visitors can book tours of its Table View facility to learn about seabird rehabilitation, the threats facing African penguins and the role of conservation in protecting marine ecosystems. The centre also offers educational programmes and training opportunities for people interested in seabird care and conservation.
Volunteers play an important role in the daily running of the facility. From assisting with bird care, food preparation and cleaning to supporting education, administration and fundraising, volunteers help SANCCOB continue its work. Members of the public can also contribute through donations and other support initiatives.
