Want To Help A Child This Christmas?

The Santa Shoebox Project

The Santa Shoebox Project is Bringing Christmas Joy to Children Across South Africa

From Christmas gifts to lasting community change. The Santa Shoebox Project (SSP) is a South African non-profit initiative of the Joy of Giving (JOG) Trust, established in Cape Town in 2006. What began as a Christmas gift-giving campaign has grown into a nationwide initiative that brings joy to underprivileged children while contributing to meaningful, long-term change in communities.

Through the generosity of individuals, families, businesses and volunteers, the Project ensures that thousands of children receive personalised gifts that remind them they are valued and cared for.

The Santa Shoebox Project is recognised for connecting donors directly with children in need. Its reach extends across South Africa, including the Western Cape rural communities and areas such as Oudtshoorn and the Western Cape hinterland, where access to essential resources can be limited.

Each shoebox is prepared for a specific child, using information such as their name, age and clothing size to help donors create a thoughtful, age-appropriate gift. Beyond the excitement of Christmas, the initiative promotes compassion, community involvement and the importance of giving.

How the Shoebox Project Works

The annual pledging campaign opens on 1 September, allowing donors to register on the Santa Shoebox Project website and select a child, or several children, to sponsor. Each pledge represents a commitment to prepare a personalised shoebox containing eight specified categories of new, unused items.

The gifts are packed into a decorated shoebox-sized container measuring about 20 x 34 x 11 cm, and delivered to a designated drop-off point before the relevant deadline.

Each physical Santa Shoebox includes a toothbrush and toothpaste, soap and a washcloth, an outfit of clothing, educational supplies, sweets and a toy, along with the other items specified in the Project’s current packing guidelines.

Every contribution is intended to provide a combination of practical essentials and treats that make Christmas special for the recipient.

Donors who cannot prepare or deliver a physical box can support the initiative by purchasing a Virtual Santa Shoebox online. According to the information supplied, these virtual gifts are available throughout the year for a certain amount, with an optional delivery fee, and are packed by volunteers.

This option allows people living far from participating communities, as well as those with limited time, to take part in the campaign.

How You Can Support the Santa Shoebox Project

Pledge a Santa Shoebox
One of the most direct ways to get involved is to pledge a shoebox for a child during the annual campaign. From 1 September, donors can select a child and prepare a personalised gift according to the Project’s guidelines.

Support the SSP Legacy Projects
The Santa Shoebox Project’s work extends beyond festive gift-giving through its SSP Legacy Projects. These initiatives focus on establishing new Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres and transforming existing facilities in rural South Africa. Particular attention is given to infrastructure improvements and supporting centres in meeting Department of Basic Education registration requirements.

Make a Donation or Become a Sponsor
Financial contributions help sustain and expand the Santa Shoebox Project’s work. Supporters can choose to purchase a Virtual Santa Shoebox, make a cash donation or explore sponsorship opportunities. Corporate sponsorships are particularly valuable, providing resources that help the organisation extend its reach and develop its legacy projects.

Volunteer Your Time
Volunteers play an essential role in making the Santa Shoebox Project possible. Individuals, families, friends and community groups can contribute their time to help with activities such as organising, sorting and packing gifts, as well as assisting with project-related tasks.

Apply to Become a Beneficiary
Eligible organisations and communities interested in benefiting from the Santa Shoebox Project can find application information through the official Beneficiary Applications page. This provides a starting point for those wishing to learn more about the application process and the requirements for participation.
